Ellwood Thompson's

Overview

A neighborhood grocery store focused on local and organic foods commissioned this series as part of an office-space renovation project.  They restored a uniquely designed round doctor's office originally built in the 50s, making sure to honor the original design sensibilities. Designed specifically for the site, the paintings are mounted on a curved central wall that echoes the exterior circle of the building.

To match the decor of the building, I pulled design techniques from the 50s, focusing on abstraction, energetic shapes and lines, and a feeling of bounty.

To reflect and include the actual people that Ellwood’s serves, I took dozens of pictures of their customers and employees holding produce and other bulk goods in outstretched hands. I also went on a little field trip to Tricycle Gardens, one of Ellwoods local suppliers, to get shots of worms and spiders and gardening tools!
